Why it matters
Your registration is how Dutch government bodies know where you live. Without it you can run into trouble with your citizen service number (BSN), health insurance, rent and care benefits, and official mail.
How to register
- Report your move to the municipality of Amsterdam within five days of moving in.
- New to the Netherlands? Make an appointment and bring your passport and your rental contract.
- Moving within the Netherlands? You can usually report your move online with DigiD.
When the landlord says no
You do not need your landlord's permission to register at the address where you live. Still, some landlords forbid it in the contract. Ask before you sign, so you are not caught out later.
